If you are starting a home business or seeking more exposure for yourself on the web then you are very likely to hear the phrase “branding yourself“. This is an important step in setting yourself up for success, but do realize that you can actually make some serious mistakes that will make reaching your goals harder.
I’m on the internet every day looking at the websites of people that are in the process of working towards branding themselves. Everyday, I see a very common mistake that these people are making.
What is this mistake you ask? These people have ran out and bought a domain name that is usually a version of their name. Now this in itself is absolutely fine…in fact you are reading right now from a blog that is hosted with a domain that is actually my name.
So where exactly does the problem come arise? The answer to that lies in the way people attempt to brand themselves by using SEO for these sites. Unfortunately, when I examine the backlinks that these people have built to their sites, I see that they have chosen to use their name as the anchor text for the links.
I’m not merely referring to an occasional use of their name…I see in some cases that these people have not used anything other than their name for the anchor text. These people are doing exactly what they have been told, through a process I call the propagation of misinformation, these people are attempting to rank their website/blog for their name.
Why is this a problem? Simply because these people are spending a great deal of time and effort trying to get traffic to their sites for keywords that may not have any traffic associated with them.
The misconception here is that ranking #1 in Google for your name is absolutely essential for your personal success. In fact, I have seen people that are convinced that they are super skilled in SEO after accomplishing this feat.
Sadly, most people will ultimately fail because they will not be able to get traffic to their website. It is essential that you understand that your name may not, and most likely will not, have anyone searching for it unless you happen to share a common name with a celebrity or other famous person.
Here’s my advice. You can not brand yourself by merely ranking in the search engines for your name! In the vast majority of cases, there is simply no one searching for you. Even more important, how can anyone know to enter your name in a search engine to find for example a personal success coach.
You must grasp this concept–if you are just starting out in your business, people will not know you and thus they will not know to be searching for you.
The whole idea of branding yourself is to get people to make the mental connection between your name (who you are) with (what you do)! You must learn to optimize your site for the things that you do…you want people to find you for your services, etc.
Remember that people will actively be searching for these types of keywords…because that’s the only way they know to find someone that offers the products/services they are looking for.
In summary, optimize your site for the things you do (using relevant keywords in the anchor text to backlinks) and get found for what you do!
If you continue to use this concept, people will find you. With time, they will make the connection between what you do and who you are, and will start looking for you as an individual — This is truly branding yourself.
